Overall, Lewis\u2019s freshman year had been a success so far. He knew his buddies were going through some stuff, but he was feeling good about the season and had pretty much locked down the second-base position. He had even been dating a sophomore girl, Scarlett, who was part of the campus emo scene. They didn\u2019t know much about each other yet, and they fought every few days or so, but the sex was phenomenal. Things were looking up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scarlett was an RA and had a single room, so the two spent a lot of time there. One spring night, Lewis and Scarlett were working together on their resumes for summer internships when Scarlett had a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat font do you think I should use?\u201d she asked. \u201cI think this one looks goofy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeahh, I\u2019d have to agree,\u201d Lewis said. \u201cThe standard is Times New Roman size 12, so I\u2019d go with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat, are you calling me stupid?\u201d Scarlett was suddenly indignant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUhh, no, I\u2019m just literally agreeing with you. I think if you go with that font, you might as well be using Comic Sans. I\u2019m just trying to help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, you\u2019re not doing a very good job!\u201d Scarlett snapped. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut what\u2019d I do?\u201d Lewis was baffled. He had feelings for Scarlett, but this seemed to happen a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cComic Sans? Really?\u201d She punched him in the arm, and not in a friendly way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhoa, whoa, whoa, let\u2019s not get violent here,\u201d Lewis tried to reason. \u201cI need you to calm down.\u201d He instantly regretted this. It was like pouring fuel on the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCALM DOWN?!\u201d Scarlett shrieked. \u201cI can\u2019t handle this. I need to get away.\u201d  She got up, opened the door, and walked out of the room down the hallway. Lewis followed her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cScarlett, please, this is too much,\u201d he said. \u201cCan we please just try to work this out?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s nothing to work out,\u201d Scarlett sighed as they walked outside into the night. \u201cYou need to give me time and space to process this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut what\u2019s there to process?\u201d Lewis asked. \u201cI just gave you the advice that you asked for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut you did it in such a condescending way,\u201d Scarlett said. \u201cAnd now you\u2019re trying to gaslight me and act like you just said it normally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh come on, this is ridiculous,\u201d Lewis moaned. \u201cAre we really fighting over this? Can\u2019t we just have peace?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDON\u2019T. CALL. ME. RIDICULOUS.\u201d Scarlett got up in his face. \u201cAnd I\u2019m gonna need you to stop following me around, or I\u2019m gonna call campus security on you for harassment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUh, yeah. And we\u2019re done. Really.\u201d Scarlett was crying. \u201cI \u2026 just can\u2019t do this anymore. I tried to make it work, I really did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh come on, you can\u2019t be serious.\u201d Lewis slapped his hand to his forehead. She had \u201cbroken up\u201d with him multiple times before, so he had no idea whether this was real or not.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSerious as a heart attack. Go hang out with your other bitches. Bye.\u201d She continued to sob and walked away. Lewis sighed as he began the walk back to his dorm room.
